1/29/2008 - A Message from Bob Bruce

Dear Swimmer,

ACTION ITEM #1: If you have completed the One-Hour Swim and are certain that you entering the National One-Hour Event, please report your name, age, and distance to me (at coachbob@bendbroadband.com) so that I can compile the ever-awesome Oregon relays. Sad to say, I cannot get or confirm your entry this information from the Event Director this year (due to technical difficulties involving the new USMS registration system), so I'm counting on you!

DEADLINE: I must receive the above information NO LATER than Wednesday, February 6, so that I have enough time to create relays and make the entry deadline for the event.

ACTION ITEM #2: If you have done your hour and plan to enter the event, but have not yet registered with OMS for 2008, you have no time to lose! You cannot enter the event without your 2008 USMS Registration Card!

DEADLINE: Send your registration TODAY! WITHOUT FAIL!

CONSEQUENCE #1: If I do not receive your information, you will not be considered for the Oregon relays.
CONSEQUENCE #2: If you send me your information and subsequently fail to enter the National One-Hour Swim event, your life might be forfeit because any relays in which I enter you will be disqualified and another deserving swimmer might be excluded.

FEES: NONE! OMS pays the entry fee for relays in National Championship events--another benefit of your OMS membership.

Cheers,

Bob Bruce
OMS Long Distance Chair

12/13/2007 - OMS Scholarship to World Champs Announced

Dear OMS Members,

I, along with many other Oregon swimmers, attended the World Masters Championships at Stanford in August, 2006. It is hard to believe that is has been more than a year since the World Championships. It was one big reunion and the experience was far beyond my expectations: Swimming in a top- notch facility, meeting swimmers from all over the world, watching the elite swimmers compete, and the festive camaraderie spirit of over 5000 swimmers.

While it is great to watch the world class swimmer, for every one of them there’re 50 of us, the average swimmer that competes for fitness, fun and self improvement. The turnout from Oregon was great and the experience was such a highlight of our swim careers. So much that an Oregon swimmer and a few colleagues and brainstormed on how we could encourage more of our lane mates to attend swim meets. So they came up with a challenge and opportunity to attend the world meet in Perth, Australia,

They decided to sponsor a scholarship, $2500 to a male swimmer and $2500 to a female swimmer. This is not for the elite swimmer that frequently attends meets and makes top ten swim times, but for the average swimmer that rarely competes. The requirements are: Participation in swim meets, (open water and postal swim count), improvement throughout the year in your swim events (must make qualifying times for worlds) and the need for financial support. The scholarships will be awarded to the swimmer that best meets the criteria and the scholarship funds and applications will be overseen by Oregon Masters Swimming.

If you are interested in applying for this scholarship contact an Oregon Masters Board member soon as the deadline for entries is soon. To apply for scholarship send your personal information, and no more than one page outlining how you meet the criteria and are deserving of scholarship, to Jody Welborn, Chair, Oregon Masters Swimming, 6687 SW Canyon Drive, Portland, Oregon, 97225.

The OMS board will decide the female and male scholarship.

However, everyone that participates in this great sport is already a winner. Go for it and make it fun.

Jody Welborn
Chair, Oregon Masters Swimming

11/19/2007 - Former OMS Swimmer Featured on OPB

There will be a special program on OPB's Oregon Art Beat this Thursday, November 22nd, at 8 pm, featuring a former Oregon Masters swimmer. Allan DeLay was a mainstay participant in Oregon Masters for many years. He was a very talented person who competed in not only swimming but Masters diving as well. He was musically talented and played tunes on the saw including performing the national anthem at more than one Masters swim meet at Tualatin Hills. His son Paul DeLay, a blues harmonica player, will also be featured.

11/15/2007 - Volunteers Needed to Serve as Officials

One of the big problems in putting together a swim meet schedule this year was the lack of officials needed to support our swim meets. The entire month of March was off limits for OMS scheduling purposes because current officials were already committed to age group Swim Meets.

Consequently, the Board has established a goal of providing more officials to provide more flexibility in scheduling OMS swim meets. But we need your help. This is, after all, a volunteer organization. Without volunteers to help plan, organize and run the meets, we will be unable to provide a full schedule of meets. Without an adequate number of local meets, swimmers are forced to travel long distances out of state for quality competition. Oregon swimmers will not be as competitive on the National scene.

This is your chance to help. We need volunteers to serve as officials at our meets. Your current Chair, Vice Chair and immediate Past Chair have all agreed to forego swimming in at least one OMS meet and serve as an official instead. But we need more involvement from the membership to fully realize our goal. Won't you join us?

If you are unable to join us yourself, how about a family member, significant other or friend?

Our Officials Chair, Jacki Allender, has agreed to hold a free officials clinic on Monday, December 10th at 6:30 PM in the Portland Metro area. The specific location will be determined by the number of responses she receives to our request for help. Please consider the enjoyment and benefits you get from swimming in local meets and take the plunge! You may notify Jacki of you willingness to participate in the clinic by emailing her at seewun@proaxis.com

If you can't make the clinic on December 10th, but are interested in attending at another time, an additional clinic may be possible with enough interest, so let Jacki know that as well.

Thanks for you help!

Wes Edwards
OMS Vice Chair

11/7/2007 - Volunteers Needed for USMS Long Course Nationals

Meet Directors Brandon Drawz and Dennis Baker would like to invite you to help putting on a fabulous 2008 Long Course Masters Nationals at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center. We have a spot open on our committee and could use some help on other committee positions.

Open position: Volunteer Coordinator- position involves recruiting volunteers and working closely with Brandon and Dennis as well as the current Timing and Hospitality coordinators.

We also need help in the following areas: Program marketing- involves selling space in our program for the meet.

If you can help in any of these areas or would like to help out in any other way please email Dennis Baker at bakeswim@yahoo.com. There is plenty of jobs to do during the meet and if we can get enough help it will enable all of our volunteers to help and swim in one the greatest meets in the world.

So mark your calendars for July 14th and 15th and come for a swim at Applegate Lake. There will be racing on both days along with other festivities. On Saturday, the "Burgers are Back" lunch will be hosted by RVM. From my personal experience ... this meal is worth the trip - YUM! There will also be lunch provided on Sunday.

The entry form as well as race and camping information can be found in the May/June issue of the AquaMaster (pages 20,21) as well as online at http://www.swimoregon.org/forms/meets/07ApplegateEntryFINAL.pdf

Entries must be postmarked by 6/30. However, you can enter race day for an additional $5.00.

Please contact the Race Director Nate Sanford if you would like more information: 541-488-6435 nathan@redarrow.org

5/22/2007 - The AquaMaster Needs Your Help

Your Editor got so busy that he did not get many pictures at the SCY Nationals. Please, any swimmer or family member who has pictures from Federal Way, send them by email to the Aqua Master. We want to have several candid pages of pictures in the next Aqua Master. Send ASAP. Also for all future meets and open water swims please send pictures.

The suggestion was made to have a PR and WOW column. This column would feature great personal swims. We note some swims because they set records, but many swims are PR's for swimmers and we want to recognize those also. Some swims are just WOW and they should be recognized. So please send us the information on those swims. If you have a swimming friend who is modest and will not let us know, then you send us the email and let us know about their accomplishment and we will print it in the Aqua Master. We are not just talking Nationals but any meet, open water swim or even a "WOW" workout swim or set. Let's start this column with the Association meet in Bend last month. Send us an email.

Send pictures and PR's/WOWs to dave@theradcliffs.com

USA Swimming has changed their water depth rule for TEACHING racing starts from 5 feet to 6 feet deep (see the USA-S text below). This rule change by USA Swimming does not dictate an automatic, emergency change in USMS rules. USMS does not have the same TEACHING rule in its facilities standards (Article 107), and USMS does not automatically adopt changes to USA Swimming Article 103, “Facilities Standards” (see USMS 601.4.6B, page 101).

However, USMS clubs/members that share facilities with USA Swimming clubs will be impacted by this rule change. You may be asked by USMS members about this rule change if they train at the same facility as a USA Swimming club. Tell them that, yes, USA Swimming made that rule change but USMS has not. USMS members who train at the same facilities as USA-S swimmers will likely find themselves following the new USA-S rule for TEACHING racing starts. A facility may also decide to apply that 6-foot-water-depth rule for teaching racing starts to all teams and lessons using their pool(s). Facilities can have stricter rules so again, USMS members may find themselves following the new 6-foot water-depth rule for TEACHING racing starts.

For any questions about this emergency rule change by USA Swimming and its impact on USMS swimming contact:
Kathy Casey, Chair
USMS Rules Committee
rules@usms.org

The following is the text of the notice from USA Swimming regarding the emergency rule change:

Special Notice to Members of the USA Swimming House of Delegates & All USA Swimming Clubs:
Pursuant to USA Swimming Rule 504.8, the USA Swimming Board of Directors has decided to amend Rule 103.2.2 (page 43 of the 2007 Rules & Regulations) which specifically applies to teaching racing starts to provide as follows:
103.2 WATER DEPTH –
.2 /M/ Teaching Racing Starts – Minimum water depth for teaching racing starts in any setting from any height starting block or the deck shall be 6 feet (1.84 meters) measured for a distance of 3 feet 31/2 inches (1.0 meter) to 16 feet 5 inches (5.0 meters) from the end wall.
This decision has been made with the advice and consent of the Safety Education Committee, the Rules and Regulations Committee, and legal counsel. The purpose of this action is to further protect novice swimmers from accidental bottom strikes while they are learning to execute racing starts. This change is effective immediately.
Here ends the text of the notice from USA Swimming.

The water depth rule for racing starts in USMS rules is 107.2.3, pages 40 and 41 of the 2007 USMS Rule Book and includes the following text:

107.2.3—Water Depth
A Starting end—Minimum water depth for racing starts, as measured for a distance of 3 feet, 3½ inches (1.0 meter) to 16 feet, 5 inches (5.0 meters) from the end wall, during either competition or practice shall be as follows:
(1) In pools with water depth less than 3 feet, 6 inches (1.07 meters) at the starting end, the swimmer must start within the water. [M]
(2) In pools with water depth 3 feet, 6 inches (1.07 meters) to less than 4 feet (1.22 meters) at the starting end, the swimmer must start from the deck or from within the water. [M]
(3) In pools with water depth 4 feet (1.22 meters) or more at the starting end, platforms shall meet the height requirements of article 107.11.1. [M]

They deserve to be recognized for their spirit, leadership, enthusiasm, ideas and we want to know who they are. We can’t do it without you. Below this message are the criteria for each of the five awards.

1/25/2007 - Open Letter from Craig Mather

Fellow SOU pool supporters,

On Monday, January 23rd, the front-page story in the Medford Mail Tribune told of 24 SOU faculty positions being cut to help balance a $4 million shortfall. If one chooses to look further, go to page 45 of the 53 page SOU Provisional Plan outlining additional cuts. On that page are the words: Close the swimming pool in McNeal Hall.

We all know this would devastate most of the aquatic programs in our valley. We also know that there is an absolute crisis in funding for higher education. However, there is no substitute, as yet, if we lose the use of the SOU pool.

At a speech to the Medford Rotary in December 2006, SOU president Dr. Mary Cullinan stated: "...we continue to move our campus toward a greater recognition of our larger community and its needs. No University can be successful without realizing its role in the COMMUNITY..." For over two decades, SOU has epitomized these words in its stewardship of the SOU pool.

The purpose of this letter is to emphasize the word PROVISIONAL in the SOU plan. There is a public "comment period" allowed up until February 19th about this plan. As interested pool users, all of us need to comment! It is absolutely vital that we all call, write, or email Dr. Cullinan. Forward this email to other interested parties so that they may also comment. As President of SOU, Dr. Cullinan is the individual with the power. Jonathan Eldridge is the Vice-President for Student Affairs (responsible for the pool) under Dr. Cullinan. Dr. Dennis Francois is the Athletic Director at SOU who reports to Jonathan Eldridge. Triple your voice by "cc"-ing Mr. Eldridge and Dr. Francois.

12/10/2006 - Top 10 Submissions Review

Yep, it's that time of year again! Now only is it time to celebrate the holidays - but it will soon be the end of the 2006 SCM Season! I will be submitting the results from our Oregon sanctioned meets (Patriot Games and the MAC meet) and some individual times submitted (USA-S and Canadian meets) for USMS Top Ten tabulations soon.

There are two new files now available on our website. These files list the swims (one for individual swims and one for relays) that I will be submitting. The list only includes your fastest time per event. I would appreciate it if you could please review these lists and let me know if there are any corrections or additions that are necessary.

If you have swum in a SCM USA-S meet or in a SCM meet in a foreign country sometime during 1/1/06 to 12/31/06 and would like your times to be considered for top ten - please let me know! If your swims are already on the list no action on your part is necessary. Please be advised that if you swam in a USA-S meet you will also need to submit verification that the USMS pool length criteria has been met and the appropriate documentation has been submitted.

For those of you that swam in the SCM Zone meet a few weeks ago - the results from that meet will be submitted by the PNA folks so those swims will not be included with the Oregon results. This is also true for the Bellevue meet held earlier this year (2/19).

9/21/2006 - Bill Volckening Wins USMS Rule Book Cover Design Contest

Bill Volckening, 40, of the Multnomah Athletic Club Masters swim team recently won the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Rule Book Cover design contest. His winning design will be featured as the front cover of the 2007 USMS Rule Book.

USMS published its first Rule Book in 1989, and each year the organization holds a contest to select the cover for the following year’s edition. In past years, a small committee selected the winner. This year, the 250-member USMS House of Delegates selected the winning design during the annual United States Aquatic Sports Convention in Dearborn, Mich.

It was Bill's fifth cover contest winner - his first was in 2001 - and that's a record. His latest design featured a colorful, multi-layered graphic interpretation of a seascape. "I was inspired by an old proverb,” said Bill, who is also the USMS National Publication Editor of SWIMMER magazine. "Throw a lucky man into the sea, and he will come up with a fish in his mouth."

The 2007 USMS Rule Book will be available in January through United States Masters Swimming. For more details, visit the "Articles & Publications" section of the USMS web site at: www.usms.org

9/17/2006 - Mt. Hood to Host 2008 LC Nationals

Mt. Hood Community College has won the bid to host the 2008 Long Course Nationals. Dennis Baker will be the meet director and is looking for volunteers to assist him in hosting this meet. Anyone interested in helping out is encouraged to contact Dennis at bakeswim@yahoo.com.

8/2/2006 - Jane Higdon Memorial 500 M IM at Dorena Lake

At the Dorena Lake Swim August 20th, we will have a Jane Higdon Memorial 500M IM. This race will be free and held at the end of the days racing, around noon. The course will be 250 M out and 250 back, with a buoy in the middle at 125M. The idea of this race is to complete the swim. No times or places will be given. Jane loved IM and long fly - this serves both purposes and honors her years of taking care of registration at our swim.

7/27/2006 - 2006 Cascade Lakes Swim Series & Festival Cancelled

We regret to inform our participants that COMA was notified this morning by the Forest Service that the Cascade Lakes Swim Series at Elk Lake, scheduled for July 28-30, must be cancelled. The forest fire near the lake, started Tuesday by a lightening strike, has grown to 70 acres and is only 15 percent contained. Word is that if the fire "breaks out" it will head directly for the South Beach area, our beloved race site. The fire crews are using the entire south lake to fight the fire, so the highway near our swim site, the beach site itself, and the part of the lake where we swim are all closed. All other lakes in the area are covered with smoke, making moving the swim unhealthy and unsafe. Central Oregon Masters Aquatics apologizes for any inconvenience, but we also realize that nature is beyond our control. Other information which may be pertinent:

  1. This event will not be rescheduled this year due to scheduling conflicts and permitting issues.
  2. All entry and fee checks received will be shredded, so please void them in your checkbooks. Please plan to swim with us next year, probably the last weekend in July.
  3. The Oregon Masters Swimming Association Open Water Championships, originally scheduled as one of the swims at Elk Lake, has been postponed to Sunday, August 20, and will be held as a part of the Dorena Lake swims. Entry information may be found at www.swimoregon.org.
  4. COMA will host practice on Saturday, July 29, 9:00-10:30am, in the 50-meter pool at the Juniper Swim & Fitness Center in Bend. Everyone is welcome to attend!
  5. COMA will host a special 5-km national postal swim opportunity on Sunday, July 30, in the 50-meter pool at JSFC for all swimmers who are interested. The gate will open at 9:00am, allowing a short warm-up before a 9:30 start. There is a formal process to completing this swim that includes keeping & recording splits on a special time sheet, requiring that you provide your own Timer/Recorder, aged 12 or older. Please e-mail Bob Bruce (coachbob@bendbroadband.com) to reserve your lane.

7/17/2006 - 2006-2007 Meet Bid Packet

The 2006-2007 Season is fast approaching. Teams interested in hosting a meet in the upcoming season should download and complete the meet bid packet.

6/6/2006 - Purchase Your World OMS Wearables

Those swimmers wishing to purchase shirts, sweats and other wearables for this summer's World Championships, may download this order form. Orders are due by 6/26/2006.

5/28/2006 - World Championships Questionnaire

Bob Bruce and Jon Clark, the OMS coaches for the World Championships, are asking all swimmers who have registered or plan to register for the championships, to complete the questionnaire. They need this information mainly for determining relays but would also like the information so they know who is planning on being at the meet. Since the entry deadline for all events (including relays) is Saturday, June 3, we must receive your reply by Wednesday, May 31, or you might not be considered for relays.

5/28/2006 - A Note About the June 3 Tualatin Hills Meet

The June 3rd meet has been approved for observation. Any masters swimmer entered in the meet that is also registered with USA Swimming may request that their swim be observed for compliance with USA Swimming rules. The swimmer must complete a request for observation prior to the start of event 1 (this includes freestyle events). For more information contact Jacki Allender

5/18/2006 - Announcements

1) 2006 Southern Oregon Open Water Challenge (7/15 at Applegate Lake) Entry Form. The second page of the entry form was inadvertently omitted from the last issue (May/June) of the Aqua Master. Please refer to the OMS website calendar page for a link to the full entry form or simply click on the following link: http://www.swimoregon.org/forms/meets/SouthernOregonEntry.pdf

2) Our OMS coaches (Bob Bruce and Jon Clark) who will be attending the FINA World Championships this August at Stanford are requesting information about those of us who will be attending the meet. The type of information includes what events folks are swimming as well as those who are interested in swimming relays. Mary Sweat is keeping a "list" of attendees as well as those who are still deciding! Please send Mary a note (@ msweat@bendcable.com) if you have registered or are interested in more information. Those on the list will receive the coaches form to fill out (and return to Bob promptly!).

3) The end of the 2005/2006 SCY season is quickly approaching - in fact it is May 31st! If you have swam in any USA-S meets or international USMS meets during the time period of 6/1/05 to 5/31/06 - please let Mary Sweat know so that your results can be included in the OMS Top Ten results that are submitted for the national tabulation. I need the meet information (place, date, pool length certification information), events, times and hopefully meet results for verification (website, meet results etc.).

8/20/2005 - OMS Swimmers at Nationals

Hi Swim Fans:

I would like to thank all the Oregon Swimmers/including the Mac Club that went to LC Nats this year. We did have a great time even thou the sun was not to co-operative toward the end of the meet. The great thing was that you didn't have to wear such dark goggles to swim those last 2 days. Everyone had great swims and some people had PR's after all these years of swimming.

We had 2 World records set by our own Dennis Baker in the 400 Free & the 400 IM. Dennis had a faster time last yr in the 400 free in a USA meet but it doesn't count for FINA or USMS. So he did it again this yr because he could. It goes to show, we aren't getting older, just better.

We also had 3 zone records set. Two by Robin Parisi of MAC, the 200 free, & 200 IM & 1 by Joy Ward of OWet, in the 100 back. We also have a new swimmer from Houston, Tx of 3m, swimming for Bert @ Grass Valley. Her name is Arlene Delmage. She just set all 3 OMS records in the 50, 100, 200 fly events in the 40-44 age group. Congratulations & Welcome

In my opinion, Oregon has some of the greatest & fastest swimmers per capita of the states. I could be wrong but I think our Oregon group has some of the greatest competition going. It is very fun to swim against one another here and know that a good job & lots of fun is had by all.

Here are the times courtesy of Dave R. & Bert Peterson for Nationals for your viewing pleasure:

Brent Lake's 100 back was a pr for him. What a great race against Walt Reid, the Fina Masters World's & Rankings chair from PNA. Susanne Schumann also took considerable seconds off most of her swims from Edmonton, Canada in the Masters World games. Thanks to Janet Gettling for doing an outstanding job & coming all the way from Idaho to swim with us. Our women's 200 Medley Relay made it to 4th place, with Janet doing the back, Colette Crabbe on breaststroke, hope the thigh is better also Colette, Joy doing the Fly, & Jody Welborn on the Free. Nice Job girls, better than we imagined.

There are some great pictures of the meet on the Mission Viejo website or USMS discussion forum has pictures. Gary Hall Jr, the Olympian was there to swim with us again, setting a World Record in the 50 fly. His dad, Gary Hall Sr also swam & did an excellent job in his events.

This meet had a great Social, with very delicious food & a live band on Lake Mission Viejo. I want to compliment Mark Moore & all the volunteers for running such a smooth meet without a lot of delays.

Time to get your entries in for the Patriot games on Sept. 11. Bert is waiting to coach all of us after the meet, in the free swim clinic for those who enter. There will be a small fee for those who do not want to enter the meet, but come to the clinic.

Until we meet again swim fans, perfect practices make perfect swims. I think that is and old saying by Bob Bruce our Long Distance Coach & Chair. Thanks Bob So True.

5/23/2005 - OMS and Zone Records Set at Nationals

Joy Ward, swimming at the National Championships, set two new OMS and Zone records in the 60-64 age group. In the 100 yard backstroke, Joy swam 1:19.70 and in the 100 yard fly, she swam 1:22.46. Congratulations.

5/11/2005 - New OMS Records Set

At the recently concluded Hood River meet, three swimmers set new OMS records. Joy Ward set a record in the 60-64w 200 fly with a time of 3:12.44. Peggie Hodge set a new time in the 65-69w 200 fly with a time of 3:59.11 and Chris Hiatt lowered the 65-69m 50 back record with a time of 33.44 and 100 back with a time of 1:11.11. Great job swimmers.
