Association SCY Records as of March 1,were published.

The first contribution to AquaMaster came from Fred Eckhardt : Subject
was "Let's All Do the Suieido Fartlek", Fred was told that "suieido"
combined skills of ancient swimming and styles. Sort of a combined water
version of "sumo" and "judo".
Fartlek is the Swedish word for "speed play". Some swim coaches,ie
Councilman, have used Fartlek with good results. Fred remembered college
days when they did the "locomotive" : one sprint length, one easy length, two
sprint lengths, two easy, three sprint lengths and then three easy, then work
back down the scale. For Fartlek, during your workout, when you get a free
lane area, step up to full speed and hold as long as possible,or from one to
three lengths. Then return to regular slower pace, and await the next
opportunity, clear lane or area, and repeat the Fartlek Training.
OB Note : Fred,old friend,this is very short,hope I did it justice.

AquaMaster May 1977 :

National Long Course Champs were announced for Spokane, late August.

First World Champs,trying again,announced for Puerto Ricon,Nov 1977

Regionals was called a BIG success, with over 150 swimmers on hand,
a new National Record by Dawn Musselman in the 50 Back:40.80

Doug Crichton was complimented on the meet conduct and the most
wonderful buffet. Leo Haglund did a superb job on the magic.

1976 All American certificates were presented to Dawn
Musselman(PNA),and Collie Wheeler(OMS).

An aside : Tom Long of PNA,who in 1958 was a midshipman at the
Naval Academy, swam and set the school record for the 200Brst at 2:36.5,
during the championships at MAC, Tom bettered that time by .8 of a second
at age 39.

OB remembers this,Connie had to comment:"I have unfortunately
become aware in recent meets,a tendency for some of our members to put down
in various ways, the slower swimmers among us". She reminded us that just as
important as swimming against others,is the competition of swimming against
yourself.

Next meet was announced for Mtn Park,June 18 & 19,Long Course
Meters.
Your board was still;Connie Wilson,Chair,Earl Walter,Vice,Alice
Zabudsky,Records, with Doug Crichton and Trond Williams, committee members.

AquaMaster-October 1977 :

Meet at Vancouver,WA.,was announced for Nov.20th
Comments on Regionals at Mt Hood Community College :
Hot sunny weather, everyone swam well, picked up some tan too.
Turnout was low, only 85,but with Nationals only 2 weeks away very
understandable.
Mike Popovich and his crew highly commented and much thanks given.
David Douglas parents group and swimmers did a great job.
Bev Pratt of David Douglas group is working on a Masters Club there.
Chuck Schaumburg,Salem,organized a new CLUB,called Oregon Masters.
SKINNY,a few folks were chagrined by MAC running off with the
team trophy each year. With apologies to Doug Crichton,if you
look at the permanent Team Trophy, you will see the end of MAC's
reign. In retrospect,it was a bit unfair,Schaumburg gathered a
lot of bodies into his group,so the points piled up for OM.
NATIONALS AT SPOKANE: Our turnout was very poor, with only 28
swimmers showing up to do battle, out of our then total strength of
185. Team totals were kept, with San Mateo Marlins winning,PNA was
second,with Rinconada third.
MAC had 11 swimmers entered and finished in 12th place.
We picked up our 3rd,4th,5th and 6th National Champions in this
meet:
Lavelle Stoinoff, won the 1500 Fr,plus 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze.
Fred Sprenger, won his 1500.
Roy Webster, won the 100/200 Brst, plus 2nds:400 & 1500 Free, and a
3rd in the 50 free.
Collie Wheeler brought home the 50 and 100Free.
Other OMS Swimmers winning Silver and Bronze:
Sue Synder : 2nd 100 Back and 3rd 50 Fly
Alice Zabudsky : 3rd for the 200 Brst
Connie Wilson : 2nd 100 Back and 3rd 200 Back
Jayne Chastain picked up a 3rd in the 100 Back
Mary Anne Wolfe : 3rds - 50,200,and 1500 Free
Elfie Stevenin : 3rd in the 100 Fly
Hazel Bressie was 3rd in the 1500
Don Van Rossen was 2nd in the 100 and 200 Breast
Earl Walter, 2nd 200 Back and 100 Brst, 3rd 200 Brst
Don Stevenson, found Bronze in the 200Fr,400Fr and 200Brst
